History of the Kecak Fire Dance

History of the Kecak Fire Dance

The kecak fire dance was first popularized in the 1930s by Wayan Limbak and Walter Spies, a Balinese dancer and a German painter.

The dance is inspired by the epic story of the Ramayana, which tells of the heroism of Prince Rama and the Wanara (troops of monkeys) to save Princess Shinta who was kidnapped by Rahwana, an evil giant king in the Kingdom of Alengka.

This dance is often performed as a performance for tourists, especially in Uluwatu.

Synopsis of the Kecak Dance

Synopsis of the Kecak Dance

The Kecak Dance tells the epic story of the Ramayana, which centers on Rama's adventure to save his wife, Sita, from the clutches of Ravana, the evil giant king.

It is performed by around 50-60 dancers consisting of several main roles and a group of men wearing clothes with a black and white checkered motif.

This dance is not accompanied by musical instruments but by the sound "Cak...Cak...Cak..." which is shouted rhythmically by a group of men sitting in a circle, creating a magical atmosphere.

Following are some of the main scenes in the Kecak Dance.

  1. Sita's Kidnapping: Rahwana kidnapped Sita and took her to the Kingdom of Lanka.
  2. Meeting with Hanuman: Rama meets Hanuman, a white monkey figure who faithfully helps Rama.
  3. Battle: A great battle between the forces of Rama aided by Hanuman against Ravana and his forces.
  4. Rama's Victory: Rama managed to defeat Ravana and save Sita.

The most tense part of this dance is when Hanuman jumps up and down on burning embers.
